Save the world, call Sbu

Sbu Shange has helped soothe my nightmare of an apocalyptic wasteland without freshwater, of lifeless seas clogged with plastic. I visited Sbu recently with my boot full of clean plastic salvaged from separating waste. That can be a drag, but at least it won’t end up on a beach or strangling a turtle. Sbu Meister Plastics employs 50 people. Sbu is a tenacious entrepreneur full of heart who has overcome huge obstacles.

Durban Solid Waste, which should help us save millions of tons of waste from landfill and the oceans, is mired in pitiful controversy. Taking my plastic to Sbu is a drop in the ocean (recycling is complicated – as Sbu’s friend and specialist Chris Whyte explains in this interview). But I would rather join them doing a bit to save the planet than do nothing at all.

You can find Sbu at 95 Shepstone Road in New Germany (083 964 1644 or 031 705 5315).

Hi There!

William Wordsworth wrote The World Is Too Much with Us. And now it’s rebooting and we are all watching, bewildered. Zuluman is determined not to add to the babble of calamity and conceit that threatens to overwhelm. This site is about special storytelling. Storytelling helps us navigate the world, it is intrinsic to the human condition.
